HAYWARD JEAN

Principal, Mellichamp Elementary School
Author, Speaker

Hayward Jean is from Langley, SC where he was raised by his single parent mother with his twin brother and younger sister.  Although raised in poverty, his mother did not make it an excuse, and she did not allow it to keep them from fulfilling his God-given purpose.

Now, Jean is a Principal of Mellichamp Elementary School in Orangeburg, SC where his team of dynamic professionals are making history.  Together they were one of eight South Carolina schools in 2013 to go from an "F" rating to an "A" rating in one year, and in 2014, they were the recipient of the school's first ever Palmetto Silver Award winner for academic performance.  The school consistently meets standard towards the state department of education’s 2020 vision.

Recently, Jean authored a book entitled, Weapons of Mass Distraction: Dismantling the Negative Influence of Hip Hop Music on Our Youth.  The book empowers the youth and those who care about them to fulfill their purpose without being defined by the destructive suggestions of the culture.

In 2017, Jean was a guest on the internationally syndicated television program, The 700 Club, where he discussed growing up without his father to now being like a father to students who call him “Dad.”  Jean has also been featured on the cover of the leadership brochure of ASCD, which is one of the largest global educational communities in the world.  The Orangeburg Branch of the NAACP named Jean as the Presidential Citation for Educator of the Year in 2016 and the I’Mpossible Scholarship Fund named him as the inaugural recipient of the Living the Legacy Award.  National education expert, Salome Thomas-EL writes of Jean in his award-winning book entitled, The Immortality of Influence, with a foreword written by actor, Will Smith.  As an inaugural member of Call Me MiSTER, Jean is also featured on the front cover of the book entitled, Call Me MISTER: The Re-emergence of African American Male Teachers, written by Dr. Roy Jones, executive director of Call Me MISTER, and oral historian, Aretta Jenkins.  Jean was honored as Claflin University’s first Young Alumnus Visionary Award recipient featured in the University’s Hall of Fame, and is a member of the Orangeburg Young Professionals' 20 executives under 40.  The South Carolina State Conference NAACP Awarded Jean the Presidential Citation Award for Education Advocacy.

As a motivational speaker, Jean is the founder and president of Speak Life Enterprises, a speaking organization that empowers communities and organizations all over the country.  Hayward is also the Assistant Pastor of The Feast of the Lord in Orangeburg, SC where he resides with his lovely wife, Starlette and their three beautiful children, Micah, Malachi, and Imani.
